Cold weather is finally here, and with so many great sales happening now, this seems like a good time to update my Winter Outerwear Guide. As I’ve been intentionally working to build a more complete and workable wardrobe, I’ve learned that having a variety of outerwear options is essential. The right coat not only serves a practical purpose, but it can also make or break an outfit. With that in mind, I’ve rounded up five coats you may want to consider adding to your wardrobe, and how and when to wear them.

5 Essential Coats For a Complete Outerwear Wardrobe

A wool coat is timeless and polished—ideal for dressy occasions or professional settings—but it’s also a great way to elevate casual looks like jeans or even joggers and sneakers (a combination I love).

Classic colors such as camel, black, navy, gray, and winter white are always chic, but a bold red or green can add personality, and patterns like plaid or houndstooth offer a stylish twist. My J.Crew Daphne Topcoat in the camel is one of my current favorites; it looks as great with jeans as it does with business-casual looks. And I still love my grey J.Crew cocoon coat, but it’s a few years old. It was recently replaced with the J.Crew Toscana Coat. For a budget-friendly option, I like the Gap Factory Topcoat, shown below.
I’m never without a black wool coat, and I love the black Andrew Marc Regine Pressed Bouclé Wool Coat because it works with both dressy and casual looks, and it’s surprisingly warm. You can see how I wore it above with a holiday look for dinner with my husband, and at the top of this post with jeans and sneakers for touring Chicago last winter.

Puffer Coat: Warmth and Style for Cold-Weather Casual Looks

Puffer coats are lightweight yet incredibly warm, and they’re available in both long and short styles. This style of coat is better suited to casual looks, but some are more versatile than others.
The Bernardo Bundle Up Hooded Puffer Jacket I’m wearing above is a good option for a mid-length, mid-weight puffer jacket that can be easily dressed up or down, and it’s a great price point. I wish they hadn’t discontinued this pretty pewter color, but it’s still available in black.

When I want an edgier vibe, my Abercrombie vegan leather puffer is a favorite for winter date nights or when I want to level up a casual outfit. Also, Aritzia puffers are all the rage these days; I’m dying to try The Super Puff and The Super Puff Long.

Parka: Ultimate Protection for Extreme Winter Weather

The terms “parka” and “puffer coat” are often used interchangeably, but they’re actually two different types of coats. A parka typically refers to a longer, insulated jacket designed for very cold temperatures and harsh climates—making it a must-have for those of us who live in areas with “real winter.” Most parkas include an insulated hood, often trimmed with real or faux fur, for added warmth and protection.
This is the coat I wear on the coldest of days, or when I’m going to be outside for an extended period of time. I swear by my The North Face Metropolis Parka, which has been replaced this year by the Hydrenalite 600 Fill Power Down Parka. A quilted jacket bridges the gap between lightweight layers and heavier coats. It offers moderate warmth without the bulk, making it perfect for transitional weather or layering on chillier days. This is probably my most worn style of coat during fall and winter because it’s so versatile, and our winter weather here in Philly is often rather mild.
While typically shorter than parkas or puffers, quilted jackets often come in tailored silhouettes that lend a polished touch to casual and semi-casual outfits.

I’ve had this Burberry Short Finsbridge Quilted Coat for almost 10 years now, and it’s one I come back to time and time again. Burberry never goes on sale, so I stalked it until Bloomingdale’s was doing their best Power Points offer, and then I splurged, and I’m so glad I did. I’ve gotten so much wear out of it over the years, and it still looks like new. It sold out years ago, so I usually link to the Barbour Beadnell Quilted Jacket as a similar option. It’s a big longer, but it has plaid lining, and it’s a classic quilted style that will stand the test of time.

Finally, a statement coat is where fashion meets function. Once you have the practical essentials covered, it’s fun to add a few bolder, stylish options to the mix—like an edgy leather bomber or a glamorous faux fur. This type of coat instantly elevates an outfit and is a great way to inject your personal style into your outerwear wardrobe.
My personal favorite type of statement coat is a leather moto or bomber jacket, like in the outfit above. I like how it adds an edgy vibe to my classic, luxe looks. But I also make sure to have some type of faux fur jacket on hand for holiday events and for leveling up date night looks.

This Sanctuary faux fur jacket is on sale at Bloomingdale’s; I got mine last year, and I’ve worn it quite a bit. I like how the zip-up front looks a little more casual than some. I also have this BlankNYC faux fur with the shawl collar that I like for dressier looks. I wore this last year with a velvet dress to my husband’s holiday cocktail party.
And then there are shearling coats, aka sherpa or teddy coats, which strike the perfect balance between cozy and chic. These are great for adding texture and warmth to casual or semi-dressy winter looks.

I splurged on this Vince Faux Shearling Coat last winter when it went on sale, and I love how it adds a touch of drama to my everyday looks, and it’s soooo warm. (The Aritzia Babaton Teddy Coat is similar.) Gap Factory also has this cozy brown sherpa coat for an amazing price, and there’s also this Amazon option.
